Club legend David Hirst has resigned from his role at Sheffield Wednesday, as reported by The Wednesday Week and others present at Wednesday night’s Steering Group meeting.
Hirst had been working in hospitality at Hillsborough and the reason for his alleged departure is not disclosed.
If true, the former Owls striker’s decision to quit the club at which he scored 128 goals will inevitably lead to questions about the future of his son, George, who has been strongly linked with a move to Everton (Liverpool Echo).
Hirst Jnr has been a prolific scorer in Wednesday and England’s youth teams this season, and made his debut for Carlos Carvalhal’s senior side in August.
The 18-year-old signed his first professional contract in March 2016, but has less than 15 months to run on that deal.
Everton have been busy strengthening their youth ranks this season, with new recruits Ademola Lookman and Dominic Clavert-Lewin, who was signed from Wednesday’s local rivals Sheffield United, making significant strides at first team level.

Hirst Snr, who had also coached at the Owls’ Middlewood Road training base, had been heavily involved in the club’s 150th anniversary preparations.
