Montpellier will only allow reported Newcastle United target Stephy Mavididi to leave this January if a club meets their £20m valuation of the forward.
According to the Express, the Toon are keen on signing the 23-year-old winger this month. Mavididi is one of many attackers on Newcastle’s shortlist, yet Montpellier are eager to earn a tidy profit from the former Arsenal academy star.
As per the report, the French club want £20m for Mavididi, a fee which smashes the previous record of £14m RB Leipzig paid for defender Nordi Mukiele in 2018 as per Transfermarkt.
Mavididi joined Montpellier from Juventus in 2020 after a successful loan with Dijon, and the 23-year-old has had an enjoyable time in France. The winger is currently on six goals and three assists for the season, and clubs in England are taking note.
However, it appears that Newcastle are the frontrunners for Mavididi. As per the report, Eddie Howe’s side are big fans of the London-born attacker, with the forward’s versatility a unique selling point for the Magpies.
Mavididi usually plays out on the left as a wide-attacker. However, the Ligue 1 star has operated and flourished as a central striker and on the right, with the attacker proving to be a useful asset for Montpellier.
Mavididi could be an excellent attacking option for Newcastle

Another example of an English player who took the chance to go abroad, Mavididi’s decision has proven to be a successful one in the long-term, with the attacker now a star in France and valued at £20m by Montpellier.
And for Newcastle, the 23-year-old would be a quality addition to the attack given Mavididi’s impressive skillset in the frontline as well as his versatility to play in multiple areas across the pitch.
