Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano is reportedly being eyed by Real Madrid just one year after joining the Bavarian club amid strong interest from Arsenal.
According to Le10Sport via Sky Germany, Carlo Ancelotti is a fan of the French international, with the Madrid manager eager to improve the club’s defensive options as the club look to find an ideal partner for David Alaba, and Upamecano could be an option.
The centre-back has struggled since joining Bayern this season, with the UEFA Champions League giants triggering Upamecano’s £37m release clause with RB Leipzig to secure the transfer in February 2021, with Arsenal missing out on the defender.
As per Bild, Arsenal were at one point strong favourites to sign Upamecano, with the defender a player many supporters wanted at the Emirates Stadium as the Frenchman looked like a potential world-beater during his time with the east German side.
However, since Arsenal’s interest in Upamecano, the Gunners have since gone on to sign the likes of Gabriel Magalhaes and Ben White, two defenders who have transformed Mikel Arteta’s backline with William Saliba set to join up with the squad next season at the end of his current loan spell.
With Upamecano seemingly available for transfer, it will be interesting to see if more clubs enter the race for the Bayern defender, yet one side who will likely stay away from the competition is Arsenal, and it’s pretty easy to see why.
Madrid could land Bayern star Upamecano with no fight from Arsenal

As mentioned, Arsenal have since moved on from the Bundesliga superstar in the form of Gabriel and White, with the duo forming one of the best defensive partnerships in the Premier League this season with Rob Holding and soon Saliba providing excellent depth.
Indeed, it feels strange to see Arsenal move on from the likes of Upamecano given his profile and qualities, yet it is a testament to how impressive Arteta’s recruitment has been in recent months, with Madrid likely to fight for the Bayern defender untested by Arsenal.
