The former Newcastle United right-back Jamie Sterry is back in football four months after his Magpies career came to an end.
A product of Newcastle’s academy system, Sterry appeared on eight occasions for the Magpies’ first team.
The Geordie also had spells on loan at Coventry City and Crewe Alexandra, but will continue his career lower down the league ladder with South Shields FC.
The Tyne and Wear side confirmed the arrival of Sterry on Twitter earlier, along with that of the Barrow striker Jack Hindle on loan.
Sterry had been training with South Shields, who have failed to disclose the length of his contract.
The 24-year-old last senior Newcastle outing predates the appointment of Steve Bruce as manager.
Bruce already had Javi Manquillo and DeAndre Yedlin to call on in Sterry’s position, and later added Emil Krafth.
South Shields say that both Sterry and Hindle could make their debuts in the club’s FA Cup tie against FC Halifax Town on Saturday, subject to FA clearance.
