The race for Andrey Santos’ signature is officially over after Vasco De Gama announced that the Newcastle United target has signed for Chelsea.

The Blues were thought to be close to a deal for Andrey for quite some time, and now, it has been made official from the Brazilian club’s side.

Chelsea are yet to officially announce this deal on their social media – likely due to the fact the club are in a state of mourning after the sad passing of Gianluca Vialli, but, rest assured, this deal is done.

The Blues have landed themselves a real talent here, and this deal will come much to the annoyance of Newcastle United.

Indeed, the Magpies have been on Andrey’s trail for months at this point and according to Graeme Bailey, at one point the Tyneside club thought they had him.

“They thought they had this boy. Coming from Vasco De Gama. He is one of the best young players in Brazil and they saw him as like a baby Bruno. They thought Bruno Guimaraes would be the ideal person to bring him on. That’s the ponds Newcastle are in now, there’s a lot of big fish in there, it’s a tough one for them, but Chelsea are a tough club to turn down,” Bailey said on the Talking Transfers Podcast.

Unfortuantely though, Newcastle were pipped to the post here by Chelsea, and while this is painful, it may just go to show how far the Magpies have to go as a club.

Indeed, while they are the richest club in the world, they’re not yet the most prestigious, and while they’re above Chelsea in the table right now, a move to Stamford Bridge remains more alluring that a move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle have lost out here, and they’ll have to hope that they don’t live to regret this one.
