Manchester City fans have taken to Twitter in anger after hearing what Aston Villa boss Dean Smith said about the Citizens.
In his pre-match press conference ahead of Everton’s trip to Villa Park, Smith was asked what a side has to do to compete with Pep Guardiola’s men.
His response?
Smith said: “Spend an awful lot of money I suppose.”
Now, this hasn’t gone down well at all with the Manchester City fans.
A few of them hit back by bringing up the amount Smith has spent at Villa Park in recent seasons.
The Villans have spent nowhere near the amount Manchester City have.
However, they have spent big at times.

Ollie Watkins cost £28 million. Emiliano Martinez cost £17 million. Tyrone Mings cost £20 million, while Matty Cash and Bertrand Traore weren’t cheap either.
Some Manchester City fans also used Villa’s lucky escape against Sheffield United as a stick to beat Smith with.
Back in June 2020, in what was a crucial game for Villa’s survival hopes, the Blades scored a perfectly good goal, but HawkEye’s goal-line technology wasn’t working at the time.

Villa escaped with a crucial point, and eventually survived the drop.
If these Manchester City fans waited a little bit, they would’ve heard Smith go on to praise them – the money comment was clearly tongue-in-cheek.
Nevertheless, let’s see what they’ve been saying about his remark…
