Liverpool signing Matthijs de Ligt has received a lot of attention in recent weeks.
According to TuttoMercatoWeb in Italy, Liverpool are ‘dreaming‘ about the prospect of pairing De Ligt and fellow Netherlands international Virgil van Dijk alongside one another.
Corriere Dello Sport reported in late June that amid speculation about a swap deal between the Dutch defender and Chelsea’s Timo Werner, Juventus wanted a straight cash deal for the player with a £107 million release clause in his contract.
Chelsea continue to be linked with the big centre-back.
And Fabrizio Romano has revealed on Twitter at 00:04 this morning that the player is ‘close to leaving’ the Italian giants, amid speculation of a transfer to Stamford Bridge or Bayern Munich, though the Italian journalist never mentioned Liverpool.
As Romano mentioned, there have been no official bids for the former Ajax prodigy and therefore you would imagine that Jurgen Klopp still has an opportunity to bring him to Anfield this summer.
The Reds have a number of excellent central defenders, but Van Dijk and Joel Matip are over 30 and Joe Gomez is being linked with a transfer away from Merseyside.
The only centre-back Klopp has for the future is Ibrahima Konate and what a prospect it’d be if De Ligt were to play alongside him in the long term.
That being said, Chelsea need someone like De Ligt for the now and the future and that urgency may well give them the edge over their Premier League rivals.
