Newcastle and Crystal Palace are now close to missing out on a deal to sign Houssem Aouar on a free transfer.

What’s the story?

Well – according to Calciomercato – Newcastle were eyeing a move for the France international when his contract at Lyon expires in June.

RMC Sport in France added that Crystal Palace want to sign Aouar.

Now – however – the Frenchman is close to joining Eintracht Frankfurt.

Florian Plettenburg of Sky Germany believes Aouar has already undergone a medical with the Bundesliga outfit, and it is “almost a done deal” for the Lyon No.8 to join the Champions League side.

Sport1 believe the 24-year-old will earn €250,000-a-month in Germany, which equates to £221,517-a-month.

Weekly, Aouar will receive £55,379-a-week once his move to Eintracht Frankfurt goes through on July 1st 2023.

The Lyon-born maestro has made a name for himself in French football over the years following some dynamic performances in midfield.

Aouar has gained Champions League experience at Lyon, making 15 appearances in Europe’s leading club competition, in which he has registered an impressive ten goal involvements with one goal and nine assists.

Crystal Palace fans should be asking more questions about Aouar than Newcastle

In our view, it is more surprising to see Crystal Palace miss out on Aouar than it is Newcastle.

That is because John Textor owns both the south Londoners as well as Lyon, and supporters at Selhurst Park would have liked to think that he could’ve pulled some strings in January to arrange a deal between his two clubs.

Furthermore, Aouar is French, so many may have also assumed that Patrick Vieira – an icon in France and one of the best midfielders of all time – could have convinced him to join.

Nevertheless, that did not turn out to be the case, and Aouar will now be joining the reigning Europa League winners on a free transfer, in what looks like an early contender for signing of the summer.
