Tottenham Hotspur should make moves for Manchester United’s Michael Carrick and Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe in the summer transfer window, suggests Clive Allen.
Clive Allen has told talkSPORT that Tottenham Hotspur should sign Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick and Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe in the summer transfer window.
The former Tottenham forward and caretaker-manager told talkSPORT: “Ironically for me it would be someone like Michael Carrick… he’s been through everything – has had some tough times at Manchester United but won things there. He’s a real solid professional who I think could be a massive influence on the group.
“There also needs to be more strength in depth and Jermain Defoe would be another fantastic addition. At this stage in his career he knows he won’t play every game, but he’s in great shape and he has a fantastic attitude and I certainly wouldn’t deny that he would be a great addition to the squad.”
Michael Carrick
Carrick is 35 years of age, but the midfielder is still playing well and could do a good job for Tottenham.
The former Spurs midfielder still has at least a couple of years left in him to play in the Premier League, and he would be a good addition to Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The problem is that the former West Ham United star has said, as reported by Goal.com, that if he leaves United at the end of the season, then he will not join another club in England.
Jermain Defoe
Defoe is another former Tottenham player who could be available in the summer transfer window. After all, with Sunderland having been relegated from the Premier League, the 34-year-old is not going to stick around, is he?
The England international striker is a proven goalscorer, and he would be a good signing for Tottenham. However, with Harry Kane as Spurs’ first-choice striker, would Defoe be willing to play second fiddle?
