Speaking to Talksport on Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur striker Clive Allen instructed his old side to take the following action after their Champions League elimination on Tuesday.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 at Group E leaders Monaco and can no longer finish above second-place Bayer Leverkusen, who boast a better head-to-head record.

However, it is not only in Europe where Mauricio Pochettino’s side have flattered to deceive this season, as they sit fifth in the Premier League – albeit unbeaten.

As such, Allen has called for a couple of important signings in the New Year, starting up front.

“There’s no doubt,” the 55-year-old told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show when asked if Spurs needed better cover for Harry Kane.

“They maybe need an experienced older head who has been there and done it as well. Just for the younger players to look to in times like this when they need someone who can encourage them.

“There has to be a couple of important signings in January.”

Tottenham's Vincent Janssen

Tottenham, who are comfortably the lowest scorers in the top five of the Premier League, paid a reported £18 million for Netherlands striker Vincent Janssen in the summer. However, the 22-year-old’s only goals have come from the penalty spot so far.

Spurs also boast one of the top-flight’s youngest squads, with second-choice goalkeeper Michel Vorm (33) their only over-30 player, and no other player bar Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele (all 29) older than 27-year-old Toby Alderweireld.
