The Tottenham legend can see great things in Harry Kane.
Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur’s official website, Clive Allen has paid tribute to the “phenomenal” Harry Kane.
The 23-year-old hitman bagged 29 Premier League goals last season – including eight in his last three games – to win the Golden Boot for a second successive year.
The England international has now netted 46 league goals in his last 72 top-flight outings for Tottenham – a fine ratio which has elevated him to being considered one of, if not the world’s finest number nine.
In total, Kane hit 35 goals in 38 matches in the 2016-17 campaign, though he was some way short of Allen’s 49-goal season in 1987 which remains the best goal return in a single season, but the 56-year-old managed it in 56 games.
And Allen, who beat Jimmy Greaves’s record of 42 that year, says that he sees the same record-breaking feat in Kane.
“I grew up listening to my father Les and Jimmy Greaves took his place in the double side. He told me he was the greatest goalscorer that’s ever been,” he told Tottenham’s official website.
“I managed to beat his best total and I’m proud of that, and I see great things in Harry. It’s absolutely fantastic what he’s done.
“Don’t forget after that first season in 2014-15 people were saying’well, it was a bit of a lucky season, a one-off’ but he’s now done it for three seasons, not one. To be that consistent at that level is phenomenal, especially in the modern game now.”
