Tottenham Hotspur legend Clive Allen has praised defender Radu Dragusin after his performance off the bench against Aston Villa.

Tottenham produced a huge performance to beat Aston Villa 4-0 away from home on Sunday.

James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, Son Heung-min and Timo Werner all found the net, handing Spurs a massive win in their pursuit of Champions League qualification.

The scoreline looked very comfortable but Tottenham had to turn in a strong team performance to put Villa away.

That included replacing injured defender Micky van de Ven with Radu Dragusin, who turned in a solid display…

Dragusin hasn’t yet started a Premier League game since joining Tottenham from Genoa in January.

The centre back snubbed a move to Bayern Munich in favour of joining Spurs, but has found first-team chances difficult to come by.

Cristian Romero and Van de Ven have formed a superb partnership this season, so Dragusin has been forced to remain patient.

Van de Ven’s injury on Sunday meant Dragusin came for most of the second half, coming up against one of the Premier League’s very best strikers in Ollie Watkins.

Dragusin certainly didn’t look out of place and has shown that he can deputise for Van de Ven when called upon.

One man who was impressed with what he saw is Clive Allen, with the Tottenham legend offering his thoughts to SPURSPLAY.

Allen suggested that Dragusin was simply ‘fabulous’ given that he entered a pressurised situation with Van de Ven going off.

Allen praised the calmness and composure of Dragusin, believing that he can form a strong partnership with Romero if called upon.

“I thought he was fabulous because Micky’s performance was outstanding, it was a pressure situation for him to come into, he looked really comfortable, he was calm, he was controlled,” said Allen.

“Yes, obviously, we had the man advantage but I just thought that again, alongside Romero, you can see the possibility of a pairing there, with Micky maybe play with three, there are lots of permutations, but the way he handled himself in the time he was on the field was fantastic,” he added.

It’s unclear just how long Van de Ven will be out for right now, but this is exactly why Tottenham signed Dragusin in January.

Tottenham needed a centre back who could compete with Romero and Van de Ven and Dragusin ticked the boxes.

Sunday’s performance was hugely encouraging and Dragusin looks ready to take his chance if Van de Ven is on the sidelines.
