Tottenham Hotspur’s Dele Alli has scored four goals in 16 Premier League appearances this season.

Clive Allen has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 28th December, that he believes Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli has performed well below the standards he set last season so far this term.

Alli was a revelation for Spurs last campaign, after arriving from League One side MK Dons.

The attacking midfielder came with little expectations, but he burst onto the scene and rapidly established himself as a key member of Mauricio Pochettino’s starting line-up.

Alli netted 10 goals in 33 Premier League matches last term, and he claimed nine assists over the course of the season.

This time around, the 20-year-old has only scored four times and set up two goals.

And Allen said: “At the moment I’d have to say Dele Alli is nowhere near the player we saw last season. He’s come under a little bit of pressure because of the expectation and he’s trying impossible things which haven’t come off and he’s got frustrated. We’ve not seen the best of him yet.”

Alli could be selected to start for Spurs tonight, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side set to take on Southampton at St. Mary’s.

Tottenham head to the south coast under pressure to get the three points, with all their rivals for a top four place winning over the festive period.

Tottenham could close the gap on fourth placed Arsenal to one point, if they are able to get past Claude Puel’s men.
