Will the Tottenham Hotspur hitman extend his deal?

Clive Allen has intimated to talkSPORT that it is imperative Tottenham Hotspur keep their best players, after being asked about Harry Kane’s contract situation.

The 23-year-old hitman is contracted to Tottenham until 2020 but negotiations over an extension have reportedly reached an impasse, with The Telegraph reporting that Kane is demanding a weekly salary of £120,000-a-week if he is to extend his existing deal.

The Spurs marksman has netted well over 60 goals in all competitions since breaking into the first XI around two years ago, but the North London club are in the process of building a new stadium and chairman Daniel Levy is said to be reluctant to break the £100,000-a-week barrier.

But Allen, who spent four years at White Hart Lane as a player and had a number of subsequent coaching roles with Tottenham, has said that it is essential that the Lilywhites retain their most influential players in an effort to maintain the team’s level of performance.

He told talkSPORT: “The project is fantastic, with the new stadium in two years time.

“But the most important thing has to be that we have a competitive team that are going to be there or thereabouts, vying for Champions League football and realistic contenders for the Premier League and at the moment our squad is capable of doing that.”

Kane’s importance to the Spurs cause has been highlighted over the past two months or so, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side currently eight matches without a win in a run of form which has also seen them struggle to score goals.

Pochettino’s troops, who host West Ham on Saturday, sit five points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.
