Shortly after finally sealing his permanent departure from Tottenham Hotspur, Clinton N’Jie has found form again at Marseille.
Tottenham Hotspur have been rightly lauded for their work in the transfer market since Mauricio Pochettino took over in the summer of 2014 but that does not mean they’ve got it right every time.
Clinton N’Jie remains a rare example of Spurs making a costly mistake. Tottenham agreed to pay Ligue 1 giants Lyon £12 million for the jet-heeled forward two summers ago but it’s fair to say he hardly repaid that hefty fee, as reported by The Mirror.
Burdened with feet quicker than his brain, N’Jie made just eight appearances in his debut Premier League season, all coming from the bench, and failed to record a goal or even an assist.
And, during a mixed loan spell at Marseille last season, a tally of four goals in 22 games hardly set the world alight. Therefore, it came as something of a surprise when Sky Sports reported that the French side had decided to sign him permanently this summer for a cut price fee.
However, in typical fashion, N’Jie appears to have come roaring back into form almost immediately after being cast off by Spurs. He’s scored four goals in pre-season, including two in the recent clash with Sporting Lisbon, and is starting to show glimpses of the form that helped him star alongside Alexandre Lacazette in Lyon’s attack.
And, according to French publication La Provence, N’Jie could even be sold on again by Marseille this summer for a quick profit.
N’Jie will have to find form in league games to prove to Tottenham that he can be classed as ‘one that got away’ but he certainly appears to have the bit between his teeth right now.
