Clinton Morrison has taken a playful dig at Aston Villa fans on Racing Post.

The former Birmingham City forward has joked that Villa fans thought that they were going to win the Premier League after their opening four games of the season.

Dean Smith’s side started the campaign brilliantly, winning their first four league matches, which included a 7-2 hammering of defending champions Liverpool.

However, Villa have since lost to Leeds United and Southampton in the Premier League.

Morrison said on Racing Post: “I think Villa will be fine this season. Dean Smith has bought really well in the summer, really well, he bought clever.

“I know Villa fans get excited. They won a few games, and they thought the were going to win the Premier League. With my old Birmingham hat on there.”

What should Aston Villa’s target be this season?

Villa narrowly avoided the dreaded drop to the Championship at the end of last season, and the fans will hope for much better this campaign.

True, Smith’s side have lost their last two league games, but one was against a superb Leeds United team and the other was by a scoreline of 4-3.

With the likes of Ollie Watkins, Jack Grealish, Tyrone Mings, Ross Barkley and John McGinn in the squad, Villa are unlikely to be involved in a relegation dogfight this season and should be aiming for the top 10.

Villa will return to action on Sunday evening when they take on Arsenal away from home at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League.
