Reports over the weekend claimed Leeds United are keen on signing Exeter City striker Ollie Watkins.

The Sun (12/3 p61) claim Leeds are plotting a summer swoop for the youngster, who has netted 13 times this season.

Watkins’ form has been attracting buzz for months, and Leeds are just the latest side to add the 21-year-old to their radar.

Former Exeter striker Clinton Morrison spoke highly about Watkins two months ago, and tipped him for the Premier League.

Morrison, who played in the top flight himself, told SkySports, reported by The Express: “The young lad has got great potential. He’s their top scorer and there’s a lot of teams watching him.

“We used to only have two or three scouts at every game then, suddenly, this young lad started scoring and there’d suddenly be 20 scouts at a game – some from Arsenal and Manchester United.

“Therefore, I do believe this kid is one to look out for. He has got great potential and eventually, one day, I think he’ll reach the Premier League.”

Leeds are gunning for promotion to England’s top tier, currently sitting in fourth place in the Championship.

Watkins may be a more shrewd signing if they just miss out, with a jump of two leagues required rather than three, but if Leeds are really sold on him then they could swoop regardless of their fate.

With Premier League big guns monitoring him, Watkins could prove to be a steal.
