Clinton Morrison hits out at Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford

Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford is an England-born player who has been chased by the Republic of Ireland in recent months.

Morrison has hit out at Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford and urged the Republic of Ireland to not bother in trying to encourage him to play for his country.

For some while now, there has been some talk about whether Bamford will represent Ireland with current boss Mick McCarthy insisting that he ‘won’t chase the player’, as quoted by the Irish Times.

Added with that, former striker Robbie Keane also took aim at the Leeds man by launching an F-word rant about the 25-year-old, as quoted by the Irish Sun.

Speaking to Jim White on TalkSport (17/06/2019 at 10:40 am), Morrison explained what has annoyed him about the Bamford situation as he insisted that he will never be good enough to play for England

“What annoys me is that Patrick Bamford, I don’t know him too well and I’m not being disrespectful here, I don’t think Bamford would ever play for England,” Morrison told TalkSport. “If Ireland keep calling and you keep saying no then don’t bother. He’s not better than McGoldrick or Shane Long. I don’t know why we keep chasing him.

“I have watched him a few times for Leeds and all I keep talking about is his diving. For me personally, he’s okay as a footballer, but he’s not brilliant. Either you want to play or don’t want to play.

“That’s the biggest thing, we ask once, we aren’t going to ask seven, eight or nine times. Then you keep saying after a year ‘Oh, it’s not going to happen for England, so you know what I’ll use you as a stepping stone and try and get international caps’. If Kemar Roofe is fit, he plays ahead of Bamford every week.

“His attitude on the pitch doesn’t look good. If the ball’s not played into his path he would have a little moan. We [Ireland] may not have that much ability, but we work hard and that’s how we get results. I am telling him [Bamford] now or one of his friends might be listening, playing for Ireland is one of the best decisions I made in my footballing career.”

Morrison himself was a London-born player who went on to represent the Republic of Ireland through his grandmother – McCarthy was also the manager at that time.

Bamford will have to go a long way to play for England now, with the Leeds attacker currently plying his trade in the second tier of English football.

During the recently concluded campaign, he came under huge stick by his own fans and the opposition, his diving and play acting didn’t set well with the supporters.
