If Aston Villa sign Jordan Rhodes from Middlesbrough then they will clearly be this transfer window’s big winners.

Sitting in 13th place in the Championship, it is accurate to say that Aston Villa have plenty of improving to do.

It is to their credit and ambition that they have recognised this, by signing four players already this transfer window, and they may not be done yet.

With no more moves, Villa’s window will be a success regardless, but if they can clinch the signing of striker Jordan Rhodes then they will be the big winner of the window, making bigger strides than any club in the division, and even the Premier League.

Villa have already addressed a problem area, snapping up midfielders Conor Hourihane, Henri Lansbury and Birkir Bjarnason. James Bree will also replace Alan Hutton at right-back in the long term, and could hold down the position for years.

One area to improve on remains up front, with it already looking like they wasted their money on signing Ross McCormack back in the summer.

Villa are trying to ship him out and it remains to be seen whether they are successful, but they need to replace him, and Jordan Rhodes is the ideal candidate, and available for transfer from Middlesbrough.

The Scot is a proven striker in the division, and can take the pressure off Jonathan Kodjia.

Together the duo could form one of the league’s most fearsome strikeforces, and fire the team into the play-offs.

The Birmingham Mail reported this week that Villa still hold an interest in the forward, and owner Tony Xia has the funds to pull off a deal.

It would be an exciting last twist to the transfer window if Villa can pull it off, and considering the moves already made, it would be no surprise if they did.
