Celtic want Benjamin Siegrist and his former Dundee United boss Micky Mellon is backing the Swiss stopper to be a ‘brilliant’ capture.

The Bhoys have got their summer spending started by landing Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent basis from Tottenham.

Ange Postecoglou will want more signings though and another goalkeeper could be a prime target for Celtic.

Vasilis Barkas has been moved on to Utrecht and Celtic may now go for another stopper to support Joe Hart and Scott Bain.

Celtic want Benjamin Siegrist

One name Celtic are being strongly linked with is free agent Benjamin Siegrist as his Dundee United contract comes to an end.

The Swiss stopper proved to be a quality goalkeeper in Scotland after a 2018 move from Vaduz.

Formerly of Aston Villa, Siegrist seems ready for a big move away this summer and he has been linked with a move to England too.

Yet the Daily Record claim that Celtic have contacted Siegrist’s representatives to try and thrash out a deal this summer.

Siegrist may not want to be a backup goalkeeper though having thrived so impressively as Dundee United’s first-choice stopper.

A move to Celtic may still appeal as a Champions League and title-challenging club – a level that Siegrist hasn’t really played at in his career.

Celtic fans will know plenty about Siegrist after his displays in Scotland and he has now been hailed by his former boss Mellon.

Ex-Dundee United manager Mellon has told The Sunday Mail (12/06, p59) that he thinks Siegirst is a ‘great’ goalkeeper with the work ethic you would want from him.

Mellon added that Siegrist could certainly handle the pressure of playing for Celtic whilst backing him to be a brilliant addition alongside Joe Hart at Parkhead.

“Siegrist is a great keeper, a fantastic guy with a top work ethic too,” said Mellon. “He would be a great signing for Celtic because he has the ambition and character to do well there. There would be absolutely no problem with Benji’s temperament – he can handle playing for Celtic.”

“With the amount of games they will have next season domestically and in Europe, they’ll need two keepers. All the big clubs need that to be successful now and Siegrist alongside Joe Hart next season would give Celtic two brilliant options,” he added.

The 30-year-old will be a name to keep an eye on in the coming weeks with Celtic no doubt looking to add more signings after securing Carter-Vickers.
