Reported Tottenham Hotspur and Everton target Diego Godin might have committed his immediate future to Inter Milan but, according to Uruguay team-mate Fernando Muslera, the veteran defender is ‘worried’ about his lack of game-time at the San Siro (Football Italia).
When Antonio Conte and Beppe Marotta put their heads together and snapped up one of the most influential centre-halves of the 21st century, the hope was that Godin would help transform the Nerazzuri into bonafide Serie A challengers.
But while Inter are all-but assured of a top-three place after a season of great progress on and off the pitch, it’s fair to say the Atletico Madrid legend has not quite lived up to such lofty expectations.
Godin has started just 12 league games all season and was left on the bench yet again as the 2010 European Champions returned to action against Sampdoria this weekend.
Speaking to Goal last week, the 34-year-old rubbished claims that his Inter career was coming to an end already – but a man who knows him better than most has a rather different message.
“I don’t know exactly what Diego is going through at Inter, but he is clearly worried. He’s a pillar at the national team and needs to play,” goalkeeper Muslera says.
“I’m sure his situation will be resolved shortly.”
If Godin is waiting for Antonio Conte to shift away from his favoured three-man defence, then he will be waiting a while.
So maybe the 2014 La Liga champion would be better off cutting short his time in Italy, with The Mirror (15 April, page 49) reporting that Tottenham were hoping to sign him for a bargain £7 million.
