Rangers and Celtic are reportedly figthing it out to bring former Gers youngster Lewis Morgan back to Glasgow from St Mirren.
Since Brendan Rodgers took over at Celtic in 2016, Stuart Armstrong and Callum McGregor both earned their first call-ups to the Scotland squad. Leigh Griffiths also belatedly opened his account for his country while homegrown talents Kieran Tierney and James Forrest are in the form of their life.
Celtic have a real Scottish spine under Rodgers with the club’s domestic-based players coming on leaps and bounds under his tutelage.
This is in stark contrast to a Rangers side whose extensive recruitment drive took them to Portugal, Finland and Mexico this summer. Manager Pedro Caixinha stated before the transfer window that he would prioritise homegrown players but only two of the 11 new faces at Ibrox had ever played in Scotland before.
Lewis Morgan should perhaps consider this when choosing the next step in his promising career. According to the Daily Record, Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers are battling it out to sign the St Mirren starlet, who will be a free agent in the summer and can sign a pre-contract agreement in January.
Morgan started his career in Rangers academy and may feel he has unfinished business at Ibrox after they released him in 2013. He’s gone from strength to strength since, scoring eight goals in 13 appearances for St Mirren this season and is starring for Scotland’s Under-21s.
Though Rodgers’ penchant for helping young, Scottish talents realise their full potential should perhaps push Morgan in the direction of Parkhead instead. Armstrong, McGregor and Forrest all appeared to be stagnating before the Northern Irishman arrived to replace Ronny Deila but they are simply unrecognisable these days.
This would give Morgan hope, then, that he can be the player he always dreamed of becoming in green and white.
