Liverpool fans on Twitter lauded Andy Lonergan for his performance in goal despite his Stoke City side suffering a defeat against Tottenham in the EFL Cup on Wednesday.

Not many Liverpool fans would have expected it, but their former keeper is plying his trade in the Championship and for Stoke City.

After a number of injuries to their keepers, Lonergan was handed his debut yesterday and it came against none other than Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham.

Liverpool fans were very impressed with the performance the 37-year-old put out, especially in the first half when he made a number of crucial saves.

The Championship side ended up losing the contest 3-1, but it could have been a lot worse had it not been for the experienced man in between the sticks.

Whilst Lonergan didn’t make a single appearance for the Merseyside giants, he was handed a Premier League medal by Jurgen Klopp for his contribution to the team, especially how he helped youngster Caoimhin Kelleher, who is now thriving.
