Spurs kick off their European campaign against AS Monaco on Wednesday night.
Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri has told La Gazzetta dello Sport’s Extra Time that he is expecting Tottenham Hotspur to enjoy a “remarkable” run in this season’s Champions League.
Spurs return to Champions League action after a five-year absence on Wednesday night as they host AS Monaco in their first group match at their new European home Wembley Stadium.
Drawn alongside the French side along with Bayern Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow, the majority of pundits have tipped the North London side to progress from their group, as they did on their last appearance in the competition.
The last time Spurs were in the competition, in 2010-11, they surprised many by reaching the quarter-final stage.
After winning their group thanks to victories over Inter Milan, Werder Bremen and FC Twente, they then triumphed over AC Milan 1-0 over two legs in the last-16.
A comprehensive aggregate defeat to Real Madrid ended their journey, but Ranieri, who held off a challenge from Spurs to win the Premier league title with Leicester last season, believes they are in for another long run this time around.
Ranieri told La Gazzetta dello Sport’s Extra Time, as quoted by Sport Witness: “Returning to the competition was their objective for many years, and they always missed it by a whisker.
“Now that the goal is achieved, I expect a remarkable run. Playing at Wembley, a stadium with 80,000 seats could give them that extra edge.”
Ranieri’s Leicester side also embark upon their first ever Champions League campaign on Wednesday night.
The Foxes travel to Belgian side Club Brugge whilst Spurs host Monaco.
