Kelechi Iheanacho’s signing by Leicester City was expected to be one of the coups of the summer.

The Nigerian striker had developed a reputation as a master finisher during his time at Manchester City.

It has not worked out for the 21-year-old so far at the King Power Stadium – he has only started two Premier League games and is yet to find the net in the top flight.

Getting off the mark for the Foxes in last night’s Carabao Cup win over Leeds United should give him confidence, but the appointment of Claude Puel as manager is where Iheanacho’s Wednesday took a turn for the worse.

The former Southampton boss was confirmed as Leicester’s new boss yesterday.

During his time at St Mary’s, Puel almost exclusively played with a lone striker and three central midfielders.

This preference of formation could further harm Iheanacho’s first-team opportunities as he is unlikely to be able to dislodge Jamie Vardy from that position.

Iheanacho also has Shinji Okazai and Islam Slimani to compete against for what may be only one place in the team.

With Puel in charge, Iheanacho may be reduced to the super-sub role that he left Man City to get away from, which would endanger the development of one of the league’s top young strikers.
