Southampton boss Claude Puel has admitted to Sky Sports that he was left angry by Charlie Austin in this afternoon’s 0-0 draw at Leicester City.
The Saints fashioned more than enough chances to humble the Premier League champions and inflict on them a first home defeat in over a year.
That being said, a combination of bad luck and bad finishing contributed to what was certainly a case of two dropped points at the King Power Stadium today.
Southampton could and should have gone ahead on 66 minutes, but Austin, after shrugging off Christian Fuchs to receive a Steven Davis pass, tried to lob Kasper Schmeichel in what swiftly proved the wrong decision as the Dane thwarted him.
It was one of several big chances for the former QPR hitman – who also hit the post – but Puel admits that missed opportunity didn’t please him, calling it a “bad decision” which he realises is easy to say in hindsight.
Asked by Sky Sports if that moment made him angry, the French manager said: “Yeah, yeah because it was a bad decision. It’s easy to say from the bench. It’s a shame.”
Southampton are 10th in the Premier League table after collecting nine points from a possible 21.
