Rangers sprung something of a surprise on fans last Thursday, naming Ciaran Dickson in their matchday squad to face Benfica.

The Gers travelled to Lisbon to take on Benfica in their third Europa League group stage games, and looked on course for a 3-1 win.

However, they conceded two late goals to end up drawing 3-3, leaving Steven Gerrard and co devastated.

They at least hit back in style with an 8-0 thrashing of Hamilton Academical, and the night was a big occasion for Dickson.

Gerrard surprisingly named the 18-year-old on the bench, and whilst he didn’t come on, it will have still been a huge night for him.

On Tuesday night, it was back to the bread and butter of Rangers B Team action, as he went from being in the squad against Benfica to playing against Brechin City.

The midfielder has now admitted to Rangers’ official website that it feels great to be working with Gerrard and the first team, though first-team training is ‘difficult’.

Dickson added that it’s a much higher tempo, but believes it can only improve him as a player as he adjusts to life around Rangers’ star players.

“I feel good being round with the first-team in front of the Gaffer and getting on the bench the other night you can see I am reaping the rewards,” said Dickson. “It has been difficult but I am finding it very easy to adapt, I’m enjoying every day.”

“I’m taking it day by day and I’m enjoying showing the Gaffer and all the backroom staff what I can do. Coming from training with the reserves and going in to train with the first team it is a different ball game. There is a higher tempo round there and it can only improve me as a player,” he added.
