Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark has told the Chronicle that there were three factors that tempted him into joining the club this summer.

The defender made the move to St. James’ Park in the summer transfer window as Rafa Benitez overhauled his squad, leaving fellow relegated side Aston Villa.

His move came as something of a surprise given he had 16 years as man and boy at Villa Park.

He has already openly admitted that the move was not a hard decision for him to make, despite his long association with the Villans.

And now he has explained that there were three distinct reasons that tempted him into moving to the North East.

“It was a mixture of all things: the manager, size of the club and the signings we’d already made,” he told the Chronicle.

“As a club, you can’t get any bigger. The signings we’d made showed we were going to have a good go this year. I probably needed that fresh start in my career.”

So far the switch has proven to be a smart one for Clark given the contrasting fortunes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United at this moment in time.

His former club are currently 18th in the table with just eight points from their first eight games this season.

Newcastle, meanwhile, are third in the division with 15 points from their first eight games and are just four points behind leaders Huddersfield Town.

The Magpies meet Villa this weekend and the defender will be keen to show his old side what they are missing.
