Newcastle United have serious competition in their squad this season.

Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark has told the Chronicle that everyone at the club is fighting for places at this moment in time.

The Magpies were busy in the summer transfer window as manager Rafa Benitez overhauled his squad.

As a result, the Spaniard has arguably the best set of players in the Championship available to him this season.

The competition for places is fierce to say the least, with the entire Newcastle squad knowing they have to continue performing to avoid being the victim of Benitez’s rotation policy.

And Clark has revealed that everyone at the club is fighting on the training pitch at this moment in time.

“Everyone is fighting for places on the training pitch. Everyone wants to be playing so we are all out working hard,” he told the Chronicle.

“We have players with that attitude and working well. It only takes one game, an injury; we have players who can do a good job. It’s about being consistent.”

Benitez will be hoping that his squad remains competitive for the remainder of the campaign.

The fight for places in the squad has certainly helped them this season, with the Magpies currently top of the Championship table as the campaign heads into the busy Christmas period.

Their form has been helped by the competition for places and the Magpies will be hoping the situation remains the same for as long as possible as they eye an instant return to the Premier League.
