Christiansen’s team selection could give rarely-seen Cameron Borthwick-Jackson déjà vu

Leeds defender Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has rarely been seen this season.

Leeds United will be looking to bounce back on Tuesday night, as they travel to take on Burnley in the Carabao Cup, just days after losing 1-0 to Millwall.

Saturday’s loss at The New Den was Leeds’ first defeat of the season, and whilst Thomas Christiansen’s men still sit top of the Championship table, it was a disappointing afternoon in South London.

Leeds are now back in Carabao Cup action on Tuesday night, as they travel to take on Burnley having already beaten Newport County and Port Vale in this year’s competition, with Christiansen possibly weighing up some changes to his side.

One player who will be desperate for a chance is Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, who joined Leeds on loan from Manchester United over the summer, but has yet to really get going at Elland Road.

The 20-year-old has made just three appearances this term, with two of those coming in the Carabao Cup – and there is every chance that he may not play against Burnley either.

Vurnon Anita started at left back against Millwall on Saturday, but with fans clamouring for the return of Gaetano Berardi, Christiansen may give the Swiss ace a chance to rebuild his fitness with a start at left back.

That could leave Borthwick-Jackson on the sidelines, giving Borthwick-Jackson a certain sense of déjà vu having been a bit-part figure for Wolverhampton Wanderers last season.

Borthwick-Jackson spent most of last season either out of the Wolves side or only coming in as cover, making just seven appearances in all competitions over the course of the campaign – and similar could be happening at Leeds.

With just one league appearance, Borthwick-Jackson is in danger of becoming a cover left back again rather than starting regularly, which would give him a chance to impress Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

Borthwick-Jackson will be hoping for a start against Burnley and the chance to nail down a regular starting role under Christiansen, with Tuesday’s team selection possibly an indication of just how much football the youngster will be playing this season.
