Leeds United need another centre-back and Chelsea’s Andreas Christiensen would be an unlikely but brilliant addition.
Ever since former loanee Kyle Bartley returned to Swansea City, Leeds United have been desperate for a new centre-back to partner Pontus Jansson next season.
For now, new Whites boss Thomas Christiansen has the much maligned Liam Cooper and Giuseppe Bellusci to choose from, along with youngsters Paudie O’Connor and Paul McKay, and when you consider he has been testing Toumani Diagouraga as a makeshift centre-back, Leeds’ need is clear for all to see.
While a permanent signing would be welcome, a loan deal for one of the Premier League’s most exciting young prospects should also be considered, even if it would take some brilliant negotiating to seal a deal.
Andreas Christensen is currently on the books at Chelsea, but despite excelling during a two-year loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach, the arrival of Antonio Rudiger at Stamford Bridge has made his chances of a Blues breakthrough tougher than ever.
Now 21, the Danish defender cannot afford to spend the majority of next season on the bench and Leeds should go all out to convince him to move to Elland Road.
It would undoubtedly be a tough sell considering his recent performances in the Bundesliga. However if the Chelsea man looks further ahead it could prove to be a brilliant decision.
Leeds are a sleeping giant one great season away from waking up, and if Christensen arrived on loan with the option to make his move permanent should promotion be achieved, it would allow him to prove Chelsea wrong by ultimately playing week in, week out in the English top flight.
Christiansen would struggle to convince his countryman and near-namesake that the move would be beneficial for his long-term development, but if he can do it, fielding him alongside Jansson, the Whites would have the best centre-back pairing in the second tier.
Leeds need to be bold in their transfer moves this summer, and while a number of exciting attackers look to be heading their way, work still needs to be done further back.
Christensen is the answer. The question is: Will he be out of reach or just a few days of persuasive negotiation away?
