Christian Purslow admits Aston Villa have already hit transfer problem

Aston Villa are already working on a number of transfers to strengthen Dean Smith’s squad.

Aston Villa chief executive Christian Purslow has told the Birmingham Mail that his side are having a problem in the transfer window as they were too heavily reliant on loan signings last year.

Villa earned promotion to the Premier League at the weekend, and they have quickly set about making their transfer plans for the season ahead.

Villa would like to bring in Tammy Abraham and Tyrone Mings, who both impressed for Dean Smith’s side over the course of the season.

However, Abraham and Mings’ form at Villa has seen their valuations rise.

And Purslow admits that Villa do not intend to be so reliant on the loan market again.

“Some of the other players we’ve talked about aren’t our players, and we don’t like that,” Purslow said.

“We’ve had a lot of players this year who we don’t own. They’re a lot more valuable now than when they joined us and if we try to buy them it’s like, ‘Well, you improved them so now pay more’.

“That’s a terrible business model and we’re not going to be doing that in the future.”

If Villa can keep Mings and Abraham around it will be a major boost for Smith’s side.

Mings was Villa’s star defender over the second half of the campaign, while Abraham finished the campaign as their top scorer.

If Villa were unable to sign the pair they would be hard to replace, but Smith is thought to have been given a considerable budget to spend upon promotion back to the top tier.
