Tottenham Hotspur’s match against Manchester City last weekend gave fans a tantalising glimpse of what is to come.
There was the sight of Moussa Sissoko and Kyle Walker bossing the right side, Danny Rose putting in another scintillating performance on the opposite flank and summer signing Victor Wanyama dominating the midfield.
However, there was another surprise in the form of Christian Eriksen, who showed his ability in a deep lying position rather than further forward as we have come to expect.
Such was the Danish international’s contribution that Tottenham fans would be forgiven for wondering if they have the new Modric on their hands.
After all, against City Eriksen recovered the ball time and again, controlling the play expertly just as the diminutive Croatian did before him.
Eriksen may have made his name as more of an attacking threat, but on this evidence Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino is changing his game-plan, instead using the 24-year-old in a role where he can dictate the play and make a real impact week after week, and that is a truly exciting prospect for all concerned with the club.
