The Tottenham Hotspur star has put to bed weeks of speculation and signed a new contract until 2020.
Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen
Tottenham Hotspur announced some superb news for supporters and club alike when they revealed that Christian Eriksen has signed a new long term deal with the North Londoners, and the player was quick to explain why he was happy to extend his contract in an interview with the club website.
There was speculation earlier in the summer that the skilful Dane was struggling to agree a new contract at White Hart Lane, leading to panicked fans questioning whether his time at Spurs could be coming to an end.
But having agreed a deal until 2020, reported to be amounting to around £75,000-a-week according to the Independent, the midfielder made it clear his future was with the Lilywhites.
“There is a great future at this place and I wouldn’t have signed if I didn’t see that,” he told the Spurs website. “It’s a very good group of people, players who connect with each other, staff who connect with the players and we all have an idea of where we want to go, and hopefully we’ll achieve it.”
Christian Eriksen celebrates after scoring for Tottenham
“I see the Club taking steps forward. I want to be part of that and luckily, the Club wants me to be part of it as well. I see a great future because as I said, we’re taking it step by step and it’s only going one way at the moment. I’m very happy to be here.”
Eriksen arrived from Ajax in 2013, and has arguably proved himself the most successful of the seven stars bought the same summer Gareth Bale left the Premier League.
The 24-year-old hasn’t been at his best so far this season, failing to make an impression in Tottenham’s opening three Premier League matches, but with an impressive 30 goals and 33 assists in 134 matches for Spurs, Eriksen has been involved in a goal nearly every two games.
Last year he scored eight times to help the club mount a Premier League challenge, including a vital winner away to Manchester City.
Fans will now be hoping Eriksen can put the contract rumours behind him and get back to his influential best.
