Newcastle United have a stranglehold on the Championship title race after Tuesday’s win.
Newcastle United’s Christian Atsu in action
Christian Atsu has slowly begun to prove his true worth to the Magpies over the past few months, making a difference for his side in big games, and he told the Northern Echo how a piece of advice he received during the early stages of his career has helped him, particularly in the matches with high stakes attached.
Newcastle won at Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday night, after a dramatic turnaround in the last 10 minutes saw them leave the south coast with all three points, and Atsu played a pivotal role in the fantastic comeback.
The 25-year-old Ghanaian has made 21 appearances for Rafa Benitez’ side so far this season, but struggled to make an impact on the Magpies’ season during the early stages of his time on Tyneside.
The Chelsea-owned winger has really come into his own of late, however, and he shared a piece of advice that has really helped him perform in his side’s big games this term, when speaking to the Northern Echo:
Newcastle United’s Christian Atsu celebrates
“When you are at a big club like Newcastle, you have to show your talent in big games. They are going to be the matches that decide your season. I remember being told from a very early stage in my career, ‘It is the big games where you see the good players’. If you are a good player, you look forward to the chance to influence a game like that. And as you have seen all season, our team is full of good players.”
Another huge test awaits Atsu and co at the weekend, as they prepare to travel to Yorkshire to take on third placed Huddersfield Town.
And three points there would be another huge step in their quest to gain promotion back to the promised land.
