Newcastle United are said to be closing in on signing Christian Atsu from Chelsea.

For £6.5 million, Christian Atsu could turn out to be a bargain for Newcastle United, if he goes on to fulfil his potential.

According to Sky Sports, Atsu is set to become Newcastle’s first signing of the summer transfer window.

Rafael Benitez has been impressed by the Ghanian’s performances in the Championship this term, and is now willing to offer the winger a route out of Chelsea on a permanent deal.

Newcastle United's Christian Atsu has a shot

Atsu moved to Chelsea in 2013, but he has never managed to make the grade at Stamford Bridge.

As a result, the Premier League champions are willing to allow Atsu to leave for £6.5 million, and he could be a very astute addition for Newcastle.

Atsu’s importance at Newcastle has grown as this season has progressed, and in the latter months of the campaign he has shown how dangerous an attacker he is.

Although Atsu remains a raw prospect, for the price Chelsea are demanding he is worth taking a gamble on.

And if Benitez can help refine Atsu’s obvious strengths, he could significantly rise in value over the coming years.
