Wood may not be a particularly popular figure amongst the Whites fans any longer after leaving Elland Road for Burnley in the summer for £15 million (via BBC Sport) shortly after being taken out of the squad that was set to take on Sunderland in a Championship game.
But the 25-year-old certainly enjoyed a fair amount of success during his two years with Leeds, scoring 44 goals in all competitions, including 30 during his second full season with the club which so nearly led the Yorkshire side to the Championship play-off places.
And he suggested that it is the equaliser in the draw with Newcastle in April that seems to be brought up most often when he has spoken to Leeds fans.
“This is the goal that all Leeds fans talk about when they see me. It was a game in which we were dominated and didn’t have anything really good coming out of the game but it ended up being a half-chance that turned into a great goal,” he told New Zealand Herald.
“In the 95th minute, some lovely work by Pablo Hernandez on the ball got it to Kemar Roofe, and with a nice turn and early cross, I found myself in loads of space to guide it home. In front of 4000 Leeds fans and 50,000 upset Newcastle fans, it was a goal I won’t forget.”
Of course, the point may have seemed like it may prove to be a defining moment in the Whites’ season, but it was not to be as a poor run to conclude the campaign saw Leeds drop out of the top six, and Wood’s departure saw his popularity amongst the fans take a major hit.
But with Leeds struggling for form this term, most supporters would surely give a lot to have their former talisman back in the side.
