Leeds United striker Chris Wood has told Sky Sports that Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer is his hero.

Shearer is one of the greatest strikers of all time and is a Newcastle legend. The former England international also starred for Blackburn Rovers.

Wood has revealed that he wears number nine because of Shearer.

“I wear No 9 – it’s the number I have always wanted to have,” Wood told Sky Sports when asked about the significance of his squad number. “Alan Shearer is a hero of mine, he was a proper striker.”

Wood is 25 years of age, and he is having arguably the best season of his career to date.

The New Zealand international striker has scored 24 goals and has provided two assists in the Championship so far this season.

The former West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City striker may not reach the level of Shearer, but his performances this season suggest that he could go onto become a star for Leeds in the coming years.

Leeds are fourth in the Championship table at the moment with 69 points from 38 matches. The West Yorkshire outfit will return to action on Saturday evening when they will take on Reading away from home at the Madejski Stadium in the league.
