Leeds United have seen too many managers come and go, and with it differing styles and too many sub-standard loan signings.

In recent comments to Press Association Sport, Leeds United striker Chris Wood explained the importance of building on what Garry Monk started at Elland Road this season, even if his shock departure has left the Whites searching for yet another new manager.

And when you consider just how many times Leeds have had to start again in their ongoing pursuit of a Premier League return, Wood’s words should be ingrained in the consciousness of new sole owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Leeds United manager Garry MonkGarry Monk may have left but the new manager must look at what worked this season

“We’ve got the foundations, you have to build on it,” Wood told PA Sport. “We can’t be tearing those down to start new ones.”

That is exactly right, with Leeds getting so much correct this season despite falling at the penultimate hurdle.

Under former owner Massimo Cellino managers came and went at an alarming rate, and Radrizzani would have hoped to maintain some stability in his first few months since buying out his fellow Italian.

Monk changed that in dramatic fashion, but whoever replaces the former Swansea City boss should look at all the things that went well this season and build on those, identifying the small issues that can turn Leeds from also-rans into title-chasers.

More goals from midfield and an additional quality forward to support Wood are a must, as is sorting out the future of Charlie Taylor as soon as possible, be that via a tribunal or agreeing a fee for the soon to be out-of-contract but homegrown left-back.

Stability is key to a successful title tilt, and that begins long before a football is kicked in earnest.

The new Leeds manager will have his own ideas, however Radrizzani would be wise to employ someone who will not arrive at Elland Road all guns blazing and tear up the plan that, for so much of last season, worked wonders.
