Sunderland reportedly wanted to sign Billy Sharp from Sheffield United on transfer deadline day.
Earlier this month, The Chronicle reported that Sunderland had made a move for Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp.
It was reported that Sunderland, who are playing in League One this season after getting relegated from the Championship at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, made a late attempt to sign the former Leeds United striker on transfer deadline day (August 9, 2018).
The Black Cats failed in their attempt to secure the services of the 32-year-old striker, and it now seems that Jack Ross’s side never had a chance of landing the former Southampton man.
Sheffield United manager Wilder has said that Sharp was never going to leave the Blades this summer.
Wilder told The Star: “Billy wasn’t going anywhere. There was an enquiry from Sunderland but he was never going anywhere. I didn’t want him to go, he would only have left if he wanted to and he didn’t.”
The aforementioned comments from Wilder suggest that Sunderland were never going to secure the services of Sharp on transfer deadline day.
Given that the Black Cats are in League One at the moment, one can understand why Sharp did not want to join them.
After all, United could well challenge for the Championship playoffs this season, and the former Leeds striker will play a key role for the Blades.
