Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder praised the performance of Aston Villa loanee Scott Hogan and stated he was a ‘real handful’ during his side’s 4-0 win against Reading on Saturday afternoon.

The 26-year-old, who moved to Bramall Lane on loan from Villa Park last month, started his first match for Wilder’s side as he provided an assist on his debut.

Hogan started in a front two alongside Gary Madine, who netted a brace, as Villa suffered a defeat against West Brom on the same day.

Nonetheless, Villa supporters will find Wilder’s comments of interest because while their team continues to falter, one of their struggling loan players proved what he can do up front when utilised in a free-flowing system.

“I thought there was some great individual performances,” Wilder told SUFC official Youtube account. “I was delighted for Marvin Johnson. That he came out today and produced a real front foot performance. I know he can do.

“Obviously Gaz [Gary Madine] and Scott [Hogan] were a real handful for the opposition. And littered amongst the result was some good individual performances.”

For the majority of the time Hogan was at Villa, he played under the robust and more direct system of Steve Bruce, which did not suit his style of play.

Despite the arrival of his former Brentford manager Dean Smith, the Salford-born player struggled to dethrone in-form Chelsea loanee Tammy Abraham from the lone striker role.

As a result, Hogan now finds himself playing for a team that is currently sitting in the Championship’s top two as automatic promotion is definitely on the cards for them.

During his playing career in the second tier of English football, Hogan has played 89 matches, scoring 28 goals, according to transfermarkt.
