Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder gushed about Cameron Carter-Vickers’ debut for the Blades on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

The highly-rated American was one of four players brought into Wilder’s team for Tuesday’s Championship trip to Bolton Wanderers.

And it was he – a centre-back by trade – who scored the game’s only goal as United climbed to third in their seventh game back in the second tier.

The outing was Carter-Vickers’ first ever in league football and Wilder explained to BBC Radio Sheffield how he briefed the Tottenham teenager on what to expect beforehand.

“I’ve said to Cam, under-23s football is all well and good and I’m not knocking it but this is proper men’s football tonight, and he’s had to deal with difficult opponents playing away.

“They play to their strengths, put balls forward and make you defend. And he’s defended absolutely manfully.”

And Carter-Vickers’ night could have got even better, according to the Blades boss. “I thought Cameron was really unfortunate not to score his second as well – he’s absolutely hit that sweet as a nut. Any other side of the goalkeeper, it’s in,” he added.

“But I thought he defended fantastically well, he was up against a big boy tonight. We all know what Gary Madine is about, he’s a good player. He’s a powerful, dangerous player for the opposition.”

Carter-Vickers featured as part of a back-three for United at Bolton, and being able to continue the role should stand him in good stead for his return to Tottenham next season.

The 19-year-old is likely to have found his options limited at Wembley this season, with last year’s regulars Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Eric Dier newly accompanied by Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez.
