Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has admitted to the Daily Mail that he thought Everton fans giving Phil Jagielka a standing ovation on Saturday afternoon was ‘class’.

The Toffees will have been hoping to bounce back from a defeat at Bournemouth by getting back to winning ways at home, but were stunned by the Blades.

Yerry Mina’s first half own goal set Wilder’s men on their way, before Lys Mousset bagged a second on the break to leave Everton empty-handed.

With three defeats in the last four games, Marco Silva is under major pressure, but at least the Everton fans have been hailed after the defeat.

Sheffield United brought on defender Jagielka in the second half, returning to Goodison Park having spent 12 years with the Toffees as a fan favourite.

The 37-year-old helped see Sheffield United over the line on Saturday, and his introduction brought a standing ovation from all four sides of Goodison Park as the centre back made an emotional return to his former club.

Having only left at the end of last season, Jagielka certainly hasn’t been forgotten by Everton fans, and they drew praise from Wilder as a result.

Wilder admitted that he thought ‘it was class from the Everton fans’ to give Jagielka such a great reception, and whilst that won’t cushion the blow from a defeat, it’s clearly appreciated even by opposition managers.
