One predicted Tottenham for title success, the other a sixth placed finish.

Tottenham Hotspur can close the gap on Chelsea this weekend to four points, temporarily, but it will put the pressure on Antonio Conte’s side.

Belief is flowing at Spurs that they can catch the Blues, and they are in fine form after winning their last five consecutive Premier League games.

A Tottenham title win would confound the predictions of the pundits, with just one out of 35 telling BBC Sport in early August that they felt Mauricio Pochettino’s side would lift the crown. One more it should be noted than those who tipped Arsenal to win it.

That was former Spurs winger Chris Waddle, who insisted his expectation was nothing to do with his past connection to the club.

He said: “A lot of people associate me with Spurs because I played there and will be thinking I am just favouring my old club but I think they will be stronger for what happened last season

“They came very close and just blew up at the end but they have a lot of young players who will have learned a lot from that and will also be hungry to make amends, not just for missing out on the title but also finishing below Arsenal.”

Tottenham have a chance of making good on Waddle’s prediction, but others do not look so smart with how things have panned out.

Chris Sutton had tipped Spurs to finish down in sixth place, a position currently 11 points below where they sit in second.

He said: “They were a breath of fresh air last season but it is a big ask for them to repeat their success, mainly because of what the other top sides have done. I cannot see them finishing above City, United and Chelsea again, but I still put them in the top six – I have room for them there.”
