Dele Alli was arguably one of Tottenham Hotspur’s better players on an otherwise horrific night.

Chris Waddle has admitted that he was surprised how good Dele Alli was for Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, despite ‘completely running out of steam’ eventually.

It was a dark night for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in North London as Bayern Munich romped to a 7-2 win over Spurs in their second Champions League game this season.

The Tottenham star had only played 103 minutes across European and Premier League games under Pochettino this season prior to last night due to injury.

Pochettino replaced Alli with Lucas with 20 minutes to go but, despite admitting that he faded, Waddle was impressed with the 23-year-old midfielder.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Dele Alli looked so dangerous in the first half but he has completely run out of steam. I am not surprised he has come off but I am surprised at how well he started.”

It was only 4-2 when Alli made way and Tottenham were still in the game, but Pochettino’s substitutions backfired and Bayern ruthlessly capitalised on the spaces they found, scoring three more goals in the final seven minutes of the match.

It was a promising display from Alli nonetheless and surely he’ll slowly start to recapture his best form. Question is, can he do it in a losing team if the Lilywhites don’t buck up their ideas?
