Tanguy Ndombele was replaced by Christian Eriksen in the second half during Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday night.
BBC Sport pundit Chris Waddle has claimed that Tanguy Ndomebele ‘ran the show’ for Tottenham in the first-half before Bayern Munich turned on the heat and thrashed them 7-2.
Mauricio Pochettino would have been pretty pleased with what he saw from his team during the early stages of the game – Spurs opened the scoring and went into the break 2-1 down.
But after the break, Bayern, led by Serge Gnabry, mauled Tottenham’s backline by scoring a further five goals, including three goals in the space of five minutes.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (01/10/2019), Waddle shared his concerns regarding Spurs’ defence, which is facing more and more problems as each game passes.
“Yes, he has been quiet in the second half,” Waddle told BBC Radio 5 Live. “He ran the show for half an hour in the first half and he looks a tired man.
“The concern is the back four for me. The midfield isn’t bad. I think they’ll score goals. I just don’t think the back four is at the level you need to win a lot of football matches. They are conceding goals every game. They don’t get clean sheets.”
Tottenham will argue that during that first period, they should have scored more than just the one goal, with the likes of Heung-Min Son and Ndombele himself missing chances.
Despite producing a strong first-half showing, Pochettino opted to substitute Ndombele for the more attack-minded Christian Eriksen, a move which didn’t pay off.
