Aston Villa are currently in 11th place in the Championship table.

It was back in November, when Chris Sutton predicted on BBC Radio Five Live’s Monday Night club that Aston Villa would be promoted this season, after they appointed Steve Bruce.

Bruce had made a fine start to life at Villa, and was not beaten during his first seven matches in charge.

However, Sutton’s prediction that Villa would go straight back up this term has proven to be overly ambitious.

“Steve Bruce was a brilliant appointment,” he said. “He’s a brilliant manager, I think that he should have been given a chance at the top end of the Premier League.

“In my opinion, he’s been around and proved himself enough. He’s going to get Villa up this season; they’ve got momentum, he has been there before and I think Villa will go up.”

Bruce was unable to help Villa sustain their initial form under his guidance, with the Midlands side really dropping off around January.

The claret and blues were in awful form at the start of 2017, and they have failed to keep up with the play off pack.

Villa’s promotion chances for this season are now all but over, with Bruce’s men currently sitting in 11th place in the Championship table.

Villa have offered some encouragement that they will enjoy a better campaign next time around though, as the Midlands side have been victorious in seven of their last nine matches.
