Chris Sutton has told The Record that Rangers could target Celtic new boy Boli Bolingoli on the pitch next month.

Ibrox plays host on September 1 as Steven Gerrard’s side welcome the Hoops in the first Old Firm derby of the season.

It’s a chance for Rangers to show much they have improved this summer after making nine signings, while Celtic have only made four.

One of those, Bolingoli, has endured a tricky start to life under Neil Lennon and struggled again in the midweek draw at Cluj in Champions League qualifying.

And Sutton reckons that Rangers could specifically target the Belgian left-back, who cost £3 million in July [The Scottish Sun].

He told The Record: “I wouldn’t be writing off Bolingoli, despite him having a stinker. But Rangers will be rubbing their hands at the prospect of that left-hand side going to Ibrox in a few weeks.

“I wouldn’t go over the top in slaughtering Bolingoli. He’s not had the best of starts but he can still turn out to be an asset.”

Sutton is right. Sheyi Ojo, based on what we’ve seen so far, is a serious talent and one who could test the Celtic man, who is Kieran Tierney’s replacement.

That being said, Sutton is also right in saying that it’s far too early to be writing off the former Wien star, though the Rangers trip is a good gauge to see where he’s at.
