Pundit and former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has declared that Leigh Griffiths ‘is back’ after the 28-year-old scored a free-kick against Nomme Kalju in UEFA Champions League qualifying on Wednesday night.

Destroying the Estonian champions 5-0, Celtic showed some of their best form to date under Neil Lennon in the match.

The Hoops boss had fielded a 3-5-2 formation, giving Griffiths his first competitive start since 2018.

The Scotland international missed the second half of last season after taking a hiatus from the game to deal with off the pitch personal problems.

Putting in the hard work to get back to fitness though, Lennon clearly feels he can be a big part of this Celtic squad.

Sutton reckons the striker is back in a big way, taking to Twitter to offer an immediate reaction and describe the Celtic man’s contribution as “stunning”.

If Griffiths can indeed bring back his best form at Celtic then it bodes well for Lennon’s options.

Odsonne Edouard had to carry the attack towards the end of last term and while he rose to the occasion with some massive goals, he does need rest, back-up in case of injury and competition to bring out of the best of him.

Griffiths has now scored 105 goals for the club, the first player to hit a century since the days of John Hartson. With renewed focus and a love for playing at Celtic Park he can again become one of the best strikers in the country.

Patience will still be required when it comes to expectations of the player providing a consistent contribution, but now he’s back on the scoresheet, and in such spectacular fashion, he may have the confidence to push on successfully.

His first realistic target should be hitting double figures for the season and from there he can raise the bar.
