Celtic beat FK Sarajevo on Wednesday night but Chris Sutton thinks the Hoops have to strengthen further.

Pundit and ex-Celtic player Chris Sutton looks on prior to the Betfred Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen at Hampden Park on December 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Former Celtic star and pundit Chris Sutton has called on the club to sign a striker and a right-back in the wake of their 2-1 victory over FK Sarajevo on Wednesday night.

Goals from Callum McGregor and Ryan Christie ensured that the Hoops progressed to the UEFA Champions League second qualifying round where they will play Estonian champions Nomme Kalju.

While the victory was another positive step for Neil Lennon’s side this summer, they are still struggling to kill games off at home, having not yet won a match by more than a one goal margin at Celtic Park since his arrival in February.

Responding to a tweet apparently critical of the Celtic manager, Sutton came to his former teammates defence, suggesting that higher powers at the Hoops have ‘a responsibility’ to deliver the signings that Lennon needs.

Sutton is spot on with his assertion that the team badly needs a right-back, with central defender Kristoffer Ajer currently playing in the position after the departures of Mikael Lustig, Cristian Gamboa and Jeremy Toljan at the end of last season.

The pressure to sign a striker is less obvious, with Odsonne Edouard and Leigh Griffiths capable of playing at the level Celtic require and Vakoun Bayo available when he returns from injury.

However, more squad competition could be helpful and give Lennon’s team some fresh ideas in attack.

Having added Christopher Jullien, Boli Bolingoli and Luca Connell to the squad, it’s clear that Celtic need to push on and deliver more signings before there are tougher tests in Europe later this summer.
